An Introduction to
Free-form Lens Technology
How will it change
the shape of our industry?

If you haven’t already noticed, exciting things are happening in the optical marketplace!
Pioneering efforts are underway by lens processing facilities to better serve the growing
market of presbyopes with improved delivery times, enhanced product quality and
superior optics, all of which could dramatically change the currently defined
“typical” way of ordering progressive lenses. Couple the successes of those
companies pioneering the new technologies with a burgeoning baby-boomer
market, and one could conclude that a big shift in how we produce lenses is in the making.

 FREE-FORM GENERATED LENSES BENEFIT EVERYONE!
❍ Superior product quality with unprecedented surface smoothness
❍ Greater wearer comfort and quicker user adaptation as compared to traditional
    progressive lenses
❍ Reduction of many labor-intensive steps in the laboratory process, as this
cut-to-polish technology totally eliminates the need for fining
❍ Elimination of substantial amounts of semi-finished progressive lens inventory for
    the processing laboratory
❍ Better service for ECP’s as backorders are virtually eliminated
❍ Achieve the ultimate goal . . . provide consumers with a premium product and
    exceptional delivery

The DAC RxD Lathe and Soft Lap polishing system will change the way your lab processes lenses forever.
How? The RxD Lathe generates the best form accuracy and surface quality of any lens machining system
in the industry. It's so efficient a single operator can process up to 160 jobs per shift
(saving time, labor......and money).
The RxD Lathe produces a lens to the exact prescription ordered not the closest lap.
The Soft Lap Polisher requires only 3 soft laps - not thousands of hard laps.
The unique conformal soft lap design accommodates any lens configuration - including free form
back-side progressive lenses produced by the RxD Lathe.

The result:

                 Unprecedented Quality
                 Prescription Accuracy
                 Lower Rejection Rate
                 VCA Communication Standard Compatibility

                 Reduced Costs
                 Increased Profitability

INTRODUCING
A NEW GENERATION OF PROGRESSIVE LENSES

Utilizing the advances of FreeForm Technology™, Shamir Insight recently introduced their new family
of customized progressive lenses – Shamir Autograph™. Shamir’s breakthrough Direct Lens
Technology™ utilizes their proprietary Prescriptor™ points file software and the FreeForm
Lens™ processing system to provide back surface optics which are independently calculated for each
prescription. The software applies to a spherical lens the personalized add power, prescription and
design to create a fully aspheric back side lens. “This new technology simulates the human eye at
every angle of vision in each optical zone and Rx range. It creates the best optical solution for each
patient,” states Hilaire van der Veen, the company’s President. Autograph lenses are currently available in standard
plastic with a 19mm seg height. Expansion for 2004 includes the introduction of 1.60 high index,
Transitions® 1.60 and NuPolar® polarized 1.50, as well as a lens design for lower seg heights.

TAKING THE PRODUCT TO MARKET
As an early beta test site for both DAC processing equipment and Shamir software, Soderberg
installed the first system in their Madison, Wisconsin facility. They have since gone on to
establish an additional beta test site, taking delivery of a second RxD System at their St. Paul,
Minnesota facility. This new technology brings the lens manufacturing process from the lens factory
directly into the laboratory environment, a shift which is particularly fitting with many of the recent
processing advancements Soderberg has embraced. “Clearly the ability to produce back side
PAL’s in our own facility is of major importance to Soderberg and the entire wholesale laboratory
industry,” said Craig Giles, President of Soderberg, Inc. “The consuming public wants products
‘right now’. Bringing this manufacturing process inhouse allows us to provide rapid response for our
customers, and gives them an opportunity to provide superior service to their patients. It always
takes courage and futuristic vision to be at the forefront of technology. Our partners DAC Vision and
Shamir Insight have demonstrated they have both the courage and the technical ability to enable us
to together take the lead. Soderberg is also pleased to provide our customers with yet another
product that allows them to better serve their patients. We would like our other preferred partners
to move in this direction so that we can serve our customers with a multitude of brand specific
PAL's," concludes Giles.
